Joy to the World (or Assisted Living Center)

Assisted Living Home Visit

The Cornerstone youth went to the Alterra Assisted Living Center this evening to spend some time with the folks there. We helped decorate some rooms for Christmas, visited with some residents, and took three laps around the building singing Christmas carols on three different floors. It was a great time. Interestingly enough, we hadn’t planned on doing any singing, so we were totally unprepared for it. We took a survey of which songs most of us knew, then set out on our way. No one complained or anything! The activities director told us that we could come back any time we wanted and hang out some more. The evening made me think of Matthew 25:31-40.

  2. She was so excited to have us there. She even passed out some candy to the kids as we were singing. She was definitely the highlight of the evening.

I loved watching the kids who “didn’t sing.” The guys especially came to life with Rudolph. I LOVE singing and worship (one of many reasons I am happily married to the worship leader!) and hate that the middle school age is the time that it so often is “not cool” to sing, and some never come back to it. Wish I knew the way to keep it part of the program without alienating kids who don’t like it, or making those who do, feel self-conscience!

Anyway, it was a great night! Jesus with skin on, guys. That was what we were!

  4. I was glad that even if they didn’t enjoy the singing, they still participated by coming along and not detracting from the singing. Great stuff.
