Family Time Matters

You may already know that.  Having time together as a family is important in raising kids.  Kent Shaffer at Church Relevance has a nice post summarizing two recent studies about family time and its impact on teenage sex and drug use.  Worth checking out.

The Results Are In

A while back I blogged about the Crossroads Sex at it’s Best event. The evening was a lot of fun as we got to have a great dinner prepared by Cindy Chamberland in Mercy, which was decorated to the hilt by Alicia Zimmerman. Both worked extra hard pulling this event together, not to mention all the work they’ve done for all our events this year. I’m thankful to have them involved with our youth!

You might remember that we had a quiz as a part of that event that Cindy put together. Students had to decide whether each line was a song lyric or a Bible verse. Jacob and Anna tied for the high score of 12. Here were the questions:

  1. Nightingale give us a song of a love that once belonged.
  2. You wear yourselves out trying the new and the different, and never see what a waste it all is.
  3. I’m off to see my lovers. They’ll wine and dine me, dress and caress me.
  4. Do you believe in him? All you have to do is let him in.
  5. Everything about him delights me, thrills me through and through. That’s my lover, that’s my man…
  6. I know that you are something special. To you I’ll always be faithful.
  7. My heart is broken. I’m lying here. My thoughts are choking on you my dear.
  8. I believe love goes everywhere we go.
  9. His words are kisses, his kisses words.
  10. Don’t talk dirty or silly. That kind of talk doesn’t fit our style.
  11. Let my love open the door to your heart.
  12. Your body is a sacred place.
  13. You bless all my memories. You soften the fall of my tears, And in my arms you’re more than enough.
  14. There’s more to sex than mere skin on skin. Sex is a much a spiritual mystery as a physical fact.
  15. I feel you on my fingertips. My tongue dances behind my lips for you.
  16. You’ve climbed into bed with sacred whores and loved every minute of it.
  17. My love’s kisses flow from his lips to mine. I am my lover’s. I’m all he wants.
  18. Can you hear my voice, do you hear my song. It’s a serenade so your heart can find me.
  19. I’m not just hanging back to punish you. I’m committed in love to you.
  20. And when you figure out love is all that matters after all, it sure makes everything else seem so small.

Sex at it’s Best

The Crossroads group is having a fun event this Friday night.  We’re calling it “Sex at it’s Best” and we’re using it as the kick-off event for a new Sunday AM series titled Best Sex Ever.  The kick-off event will be a nice dinner at the church, complete with dress-up attire for the participants.

One of the activities we have planned for the evening is a game where students have to guess whether a line of text is a song or a Bible verse.  If you want to give it a try, here’s the list:

Cindy, one of our Crossroads Leaders, came up with the list.  I’ll share the answers after the event.  I’m looking forward to tackling this subject with the youth as we explore what the Bible really says about sex, love, lust, dating, dress and more.  Should be an interesting adventure!

Who Is God?

Google just released their Zeitgeist 2007 statistics. Basically, it’s a snapshot of what people are looking up online through Google. One interesting piece is the “Who is …” search ranking. Here’s the list:

  1. who is god
  2. who is who
  3. who is lookup
  4. who is jesus
  5. who is it
  6. who is buckethead
  7. who is calling
  8. who is keppler
  9. who is this
  10. who is satan

People are searching for God and we have an opportunity to share Him with them this Christmas season. Considering inviting a friend to Christmas Eve services this year!

Also interesting to note are the top entries from the “What” and “How” categories. They are: “What is love” and “How to kiss.” I guess that means our “Best Sex Ever” Crossroads series that kicks off in January should be a hit. I’m excited about looking at what the Bible has to say about this topic with our youth. Should be a blast!

Sex, Divorce and Rock ‘n’ Roll

When I first started teaching Confirmation, my least favorite topic to teach was the Commandments.  I accepted that they are important, but I didn’t think they ranked up there with Communion, Baptism, the Lord’s Prayer and the Creed.  I’ve done a 180 on this in the last few years.  Now, they are my favorite.  The students interact with the Commandments in a real way as they are challenged to evaluate their current lifestyle in light of God’s Word.

And now we’re into the really good stuff.  Last week was murder, including hating someone.  Tonight we covered Adultery.  The points, with links to the Scripture passages we use to talk about them:

  1. Sex is a gift from God
  2. Sex outside marriage is sin
  3. Divorce is sin (We also stress that there is forgiveness for divorce)
  4. Impure thoughts are sin (we also cover how we dress, especially as it relates to girls’ dress habits)
  5. Homosexuality is sin (And no different from lying, stealing, cheating or killing in God’s eyes.  God loves the sinner, but hates the sin.)

The lustful thoughts and how we dress conversation is always interesting.  Phil Morris, one of our small group leaders, is a great resource here as he shares his thoughts with the kids.  He’s younger than me–and much cooler–so when he backs me up, the students really listen.  Jaime passed along a great website that specializes in fashionable clothing and swimsuits that are more modest than the standard offerings at the mall.  Check them out at DiviineModesTee.com and show your kids.

If you want to check out the full audio recording of the class, it’s available on our Podcast. Directions for subscribing in iTunes can be found on our website. There’s even a funny interruption around the 25 minute mark in the podcast. You can also download the current homework as well.
